Robyn M. Garcia is an introverted biologist, photographer, and writer who over-thinks every situation she encounters. Over-thinking is a trait that can be exhausting in the best of times; during the current pandemic and overall political and social climate in our country, it can be downright paralyzing. Take this little “About” piece for example…seems like it should be pretty simple, straight-forward, and easy to write. And yet I can’t tell you how long I’ve delayed the launch of my blog because of it. What’s really important about me—what would you really want to know? Is it hobbies? Education? Jobs that I‘ve had, pets with which I share my life? My marital status, or where we make our home? Do any of those details really tell you who I am? Do they tell you who anyone is, for that matter? There are aspects of being human to which I can point a finger and justify a desire to instead be a marine iguana, just sunning on rocks on a distant island, going for the occasional dip in the sea, and munching on algae. But the part of being human that I love, and which provides such ample fodder for an over-thinker such as myself, is how complex and diverse we are, physically, emotionally, and intellectually, both as a species and as individuals. And how we change, and are yet in some ways immune to change, over time. We are all so incredibly much more than a few sentences in an “About” section, and it’s the sum of those innumerable details that make us each who we are. Who I am and what I’m “about” is revealed in my blog–one emotion, experience, and opinion at a time.
